In one version, you click through pages with no sense of scale. A lesson appears. Then another. Somewhere, presumably, the course ends. But where exactly remains unclear. Three pages? Thirty? Forty? You have no idea. In another version, the course looks exactly the same. Except there is a progress bar. It calmly informs you that you are twenty-eight percent finished. Suddenly the experience changes. You are no longer wandering through pages. You are moving toward something. The mind begins doing quiet arithmetic. Twenty-eight percent is already done. Fifty percent is not far away. And once you reach fifty percent, well, it would be silly to stop there. Nothing about the course itself has changed. Only the line. And yet the entire psychological experience of the task shifts.</p><h2><strong>The Science of the Thin Line</strong></h2><p>There is surprisingly little research studying progress bars on their own. Most studies examine them together with other gamification elements. So we decided to isolate their effect. In a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-83845-3_13">small study</a>, students completed an online course. One group saw a progress bar while working through the material. Another group did not. Everything else remained identical. The simple visualization makes students feel they know: where they are, how much remains and how close they are to finishing. This matters more than one might expect. Because motivation often has less to do with difficulty and more to do with <strong>uncertainty</strong>.</p><p>At first glance that sounds almost trivial. Of course a progress bar shows progress. But the interesting discovery was what it <strong>did not</strong> strongly influence. <strong>The progress bar did not dramatically increase the feeling of approaching the final goal. </strong>That is fascinating. Humans are surprisingly willing to work hard. What they cannot tolerate is not knowing where they are inside the effort.</p><blockquote><p>The bar does not just measure progress, and it does not motivate because it shows the end. It motivates because it makes the journey legible. A progress bar is not a reward mechanism. It is an orientation tool. It makes effort visible and shows the distance between the current state and the desired one. <strong>It manufactures the feeling of progress.  </strong></p></blockquote><p>Another interesting effect appeared during the study. Students who saw the progress bar reported a stronger sense of accomplishment after finishing each section. The visual movement of the bar itself created a small moment of reward. You complete a page and the bar moves forward just a little. That small movement signals something reassuring. The work counted. Something advanced. You are no longer where you were five minutes ago. The brain notices.</p><h2><strong>Humans Hate the Infinite Scroll of Effort</strong></h2><p>The real enemy of motivation is not effort. It is <strong>vagueness</strong>. The progress bar solves exactly this problem. It turns an ambiguous process into a <strong>finite one</strong>. Suddenly the brain switches from avoidance to completion mode. Completion mode is extremely powerful. </p><blockquote><p><strong>Humans love finishing things.</strong></p></blockquote><p>The progress bar harnesses that instinct. It converts effort into momentum. Students who did not see a progress bar noticed something as well. Many later said they would have liked one. Meanwhile, students who did see the bar had a different complaint: they wanted it to be more prominent. Progress bars, it seems, have quietly become part of the infrastructure of digital interfaces. <strong>We barely notice them when they are present. But when they disappear, something feels wrong.</strong></p><p>It is the same feeling as watching a computer freeze without a loading indicator. Nothing is happening, or at least nothing visible is happening, and suddenly the uncertainty becomes irritating. The progress bar reassures us that the machine is thinking and <strong>decreases the stress resulting from uncertainty</strong>. This reveals something deeper about motivation. Much of modern gamification focuses on rewards: points, badges, coins, leaderboards. These elements try to motivate by adding excitement to tasks that might otherwise feel tedious. But the progress bar works differently. It does not reward. <strong>It informs. It tells you where you are. And strangely, that is often enough.</strong> </p><h2><strong>Why Progress Bars Work So Well in Learning</strong></h2><p>In other words, a progress bar does not merely show progress. <strong>It shapes how progress is perceived. </strong>It is part interface, part psychology, and part theater. Yet in education this little illusion becomes something genuinely useful. Progress bars are surprisingly well suited to education. Without feedback, students cannot tell whether they are <strong>moving forward or just moving</strong>. A progress bar solves this problem with surprising elegance. It externalizes the journey. It tells the learner where they are, how far they have come, and how much remains. Even when the learning itself is complex, the path suddenly <strong>feels structured</strong>. </p><p>In learning environments this distinction matters enormously. Learning is full of invisible effort. Understanding develops quietly and often slowly. Students frequently cannot tell whether they are progressing or simply spending their time. <strong>The progress bar transforms that invisible effort into something visible. </strong>It gives learners orientation inside the process. Instead of wondering how much remains, they see their position inside the journey. That alone can make continuing feel easier.</p><blockquote><p><strong>Perhaps this explains why progress bars consistently rank among the most appreciated design elements in digital learning environments. They do not distract from the task. They simply show the path and allow to feel progress.</strong></p></blockquote><p>And that raises an interesting question. If such a simple visualization can transform how we experience effort, what would happen if we could do the same for thinking? Deep learning often feels frustrating precisely because progress is hard to see. You struggle with an idea for hours, sometimes days, without clear signals that understanding is actually improving. The mind is working, but the progress bar is invisible.</p><p>Perhaps one of the real challenges of learning design is not making thinking easier. <strong>It is making progress visible. Because humans will endure remarkable effort if they know they are moving forward. And sometimes all we need in order to continue is the quiet reassurance that the effort is leading somewhere by a thin line slowly filling The concept map made its unexpected debut in the top ranks not by dazzling with sparkle, but by doing what no badge or leaderboard ever could, showing learners the big picture, where they&#8217;re going, how ideas connect, and what&#8217;s still out there to explore.</p><p>Gamification can be good. We all like a little push, a bit of sparkle, a gentle nudge to keep going. Points, badges, and leaderboards can motivate some learners, especially when used wisely. <strong>The danger lies in gamification that substitutes </strong><em><strong>motion</strong></em><strong> for </strong><em><strong>meaning</strong></em><strong>, where learners are rewarded not for insight, but for activity.</strong> Brilliant&#8217;s superpower is <em>not</em> urgency. It is the entire architecture. Every tap is wrapped in micro-rewards: XP points, hearts, badges. Is Duolingo motivating because of the points? Or because of something else?</p><h2><strong>According to Science: Points Alone Don&#8217;t Win</strong></h2><p>In our recent study on Game Design Elements (GDEs) and their motivational impact, we ranked a variety of elements by learner preference. <strong>Points? They ranked fifth. </strong>Respectable, like a polite round of applause at a local talent show. <strong>The real winners? Progress bars, achievements, and feedback</strong>, things that show learning, not just activity. The twist? Duolingo uses those too. But it wraps them in a motivational bundle of daily rituals and visual fireworks. The streak? A progress bar. The badge? An achievement. The leaderboard? Social comparison turned spectacle.</p><p>Our study supports this design philosophy. When we asked learners to rank various gamified elements, progress bars and achievements emerged as clear favourites. Across age groups, learners preferred structure over spectacle. Especially older learners. They cared less about collecting tokens and more about knowing: <em>Am I actually getting better? </em>Among younger learners, even points and leaderboards still had pull, not because they taught Duolingo doesn&#8217;t just serve you points or XPs. It uses points as scaffolding to build structure, direction, and confidence. <strong>And it suits well for language learning!</strong></p><p>So why does Duolingo work? Because Duolingo isn&#8217;t actually about points. It&#8217;s about habit. It&#8217;s a coach with a whistle. <strong>Its job is to get you onto the field. Daily. </strong>Duolingo&#8217;s biggest magic trick is making repetition feel rewarding. The points are scaffolding for repetition. And repetition in language learning matters. Early language acquisition depends heavily on exposure, retrieval, and pattern reinforcement. At that stage, deep conceptual scaffolding isn&#8217;t the bottleneck. Consistency is. Duolingo&#8217;s real genius is not gamification. It&#8217;s friction reduction. It lowers the threshold for showing up. The app transforms a cognitively demanding task, memorising vocabulary, syntax, and pronunciation, into a habit loop. It&#8217;s not the points that teach you. It&#8217;s the fact that you show up every day, because of the points. Would this work for mathematics or deep philosophical reasoning? Maybe not. Our research suggests that those learners need more conceptual scaffolding and motivation beyond quick wins, think concept maps, feedback loops, and structured goals. For deeper learning, XP is not enough. Learners want orientation. Duolingo is optimised for daily exposure. It is not optimised for deep structural reasoning. And it doesn&#8217;t pretend to be. That restraint may be its most intelligent design decision.</p><p>But for language learning, especially at the early stages, gamification works like a charm. Ritual, repetition, and just enough pressure from a smug green owl to keep going.</p><p>The temptation for educational platforms is clear: Duolingo is wildly successful, therefore copy its gamification model. But here&#8217;s the real lesson: Duolingo fits its learners and its domain. For other platforms, which aim to deepen conceptual understanding in math and science, or nurture learning in learners&#8217; own pace and time, copying Duolingo&#8217;s XP-and-streak engine might lead to distraction, not depth.</p><p><strong>So let&#8217;s gamify wisely. Make learning visible. Make progress feel rewarding. Never let the game outshine the learning.</strong></p><p>One of the more interesting findings in the study wasn&#8217;t about which elements ranked highest overall. It was about <em>when </em>they made sense. Competition and progression felt more natural for application-oriented tasks. Feedback and collaboration aligned better with higher-order thinking, analysis, evaluation, and deeper reasoning.</p><p>In other words, gamification is not neutral. It interacts with the cognitive demand of the task. You can&#8217;t just sprinkle leaderboards over evaluation tasks and expect depth to happen. And you can&#8217;t assume that feedback loops alone will sustain basic practice drills. The fit matters.</p><blockquote><p>The lesson is:</p><p><strong>Match the motivational architecture to the cognitive demands of the domain.</strong></p></blockquote><p>The Duolingo App doesn&#8217;t need to teach you everything. It just needs to make sure you come back tomorrow. There&#8217;s a certain honesty in that. And perhaps that&#8217;s why Duolingo continues to thrive: it doesn&#8217;t overreach. It meets its learners where they are and turns the fleeting attention of modern life into a learning opportunity. One tiny lesson at a time.</p><p>And for a generation who gamifies their step count and meditates to app timers, maybe that&#8217;s exactly the language learning we need. But the question still remains open how to make deep thinking rewarding ... as a game? Duolingo makes repetition addictive. But can we make seeking understanding addictive? Can deep thinking, not just daily practice, feel like progress? </p><blockquote><p><strong>Confetti sustains habits. Structure sustains competence.</strong></p></blockquote><p>And in an AI world, where machines can produce output effortlessly, what matters most is not whether learners show up. But anyone who has ever solved a difficult puzzle, untangled a stubborn bug, or felt a pattern suddenly click into place knows this assumption is false.</p><blockquote><p><strong>Thinking can be addictive.</strong></p></blockquote><p>There is a particular kind of cognitive satisfaction that comes from understanding, when confusion gives way to structure, when scattered pieces suddenly align. That moment does not need fireworks. The understanding <em>is</em> the reward. And yet, many digital learning environments behave as if it weren&#8217;t.</p><h3><strong>When Rewards Arrive Too Early</strong></h3><p>Our recent study on learner preferences in gamified learning environments makes this tension visible. Across 125 participants, learners consistently preferred game elements that <em>made learning progress visible</em>; not those that merely decorated the activity. Progress bars, feedback, concept maps, and meaningful achievements ranked highest. They&#8217;re More Selective.</strong></h3><p>The data becomes even more interesting with age. Younger learners show slightly higher tolerance for points. But as age increases, preference shifts decisively toward elements that provide <strong>orientation</strong>: concept maps, feedback, progress indicators. Older learners are not chasing rewards; they are tracking trajectory. This is not a loss of motivation. It is a refinement of it.</p><p>As learners mature, motivation becomes less about stimulation and more about agency. Less about rewards handed out, more about judgment earned. They want learning environments that respect their capacity to evaluate progress for themselves.</p><p>Seen this way, the preference for progress indicators over prizes is not surprising. It reflects a deeper shift, from learning as performance to learning as navigation. These are cognitively demanding tools, and precisely for that reason, they motivate.</p><p>Confetti celebrates activity. Structure rewards understanding.</p><h3><strong>Where This Gets Dangerous</strong></h3><p>In a world shaped by AI, which can generate outputs effortlessly. If learners rely on AI before they have an internal structure, learning collapses into imitation. The system produces answers; the learner produces nothing of their own, no judgment, no sense-making, no ability to tell whether something is good, wrong, or meaningful.</p><p>What the study shows is that learners intuitively understand this risk. They gravitate toward learning environments that help them supervise their own progress. Tools that support orientation, structure, and feedback are exactly the tools required to supervise machines later on.</p><blockquote><p><em>You cannot oversee what you do not understand. You cannot judge what you cannot place in context.</em></p></blockquote><h3><strong>Why Interdisciplinary Learning Fits So Well</strong></h3><p>This also explains why interdisciplinary learning works and why it feels different. When learning starts with real questions rather than isolated techniques, structure emerges naturally. Learners must connect ideas, navigate uncertainty, and decide what matters. Progress is not measured by points collected, but by insight gained.</p><p>Interdisciplinary learning does what the most effective gamification elements do: it makes thinking necessary, visible and satisfying. It creates friction, not to slow students down, but to give learning weight.</p><p>Seen this way, the popularity of progress bars and concept maps is no accident. They mirror what good interdisciplinary problems already provide: a sense of movement, connection, and purpose.</p><h3><strong>The Hard Conclusion</strong></h3><p>Here is the uncomfortable implication. Much of what we call &#8220;gamification&#8221; fails not because it is badly designed, but because it is conceptually misaligned. It replaces orientation with stimulation. It confuses activity with progress. It treats motivation as something to inject rather than something to cultivate.</p><p>Learners are telling us, very clearly, that this is appreciated if they learn for entertainment and pleasure, but it does not work if they seek real, deep understanding and cognitive satisfaction. They do not want confetti. </p><p>And in an AI-saturated world, the cost of ignoring this is no longer just boredom. It is the quiet erosion of judgment. Systems that train learners to chase signals instead of form understanding do not merely fail to educate. They produce people fluent in output and poor in agency.</p><p>The question, then, is not only how to motivate learners. It is whether we are willing to trust that thinking, real thinking, is demanding enough, rewarding enough, and powerful enough to stand on its own. It began with a far simpler and more pragmatic question: </p><blockquote><p><em>How can we build the best possible AI tutor with the least possible complexity in the technical pipeline?</em></p></blockquote><p>Beyond this pragmatic requirement, we wanted an AI tutor that does not try to know everything, but instead knows exactly how to support a learner. It does not overwhelm students with perfect answers. It does not take over the learning process. Instead, it notices when someone is struggling, adjusts its support, offers encouragement when things get difficult, and celebrates authentic progress. Every response remains strictly aligned with carefully curated learning goals and curriculum. <strong>The tutor&#8217;s behaviour is not accidental; it is deliberately crafted.</strong></p><div constrained behaviour, adaptive encouragement, and trend-based hint and praise logic</strong>. At its core, however, the principle is both elegant and universal. When a learner&#8217;s need for help increases, the AI responds with supportive encouragement and more guided hints. When the learner stabilises and begins to proceed independently, the AI shifts toward praise that reinforces autonomy. Every message is grounded in approved, age-appropriate, domain-specific content, no improvisation, no wild guesses, no overconfident explanations. Learning remains safe, trustworthy, and focused. This is not a tutor that tries to answer everything or solve everything. Instead, it follows a different philosophy: <strong>AI that stays within human-designed boundaries, that scaffolds rather than solves, and that adapts to learners with emotional sensitivity.</strong></p><h2><strong>A Targeted Focus: Pedagogical Control, Not Model Training</strong></h2><p>Most AI tutoring systems follow one of two paths: generic role prompting or heavy technical pipelines. We chose a third path. <strong>We use a powerful general-purpose language model, but we place a deliberate pedagogical control layer around it.</strong></p><p>One of the clearest lessons from this work is that pedagogy does not survive as an add-on. When pedagogical goals are expressed only as vague instructions like &#8220;be encouraging&#8221; or &#8220;don&#8217;t give the solution,&#8221; they are easily overridden by a model&#8217;s default optimization toward speed, helpfulness, and answer completeness.</p><blockquote><p>What we found instead is that pedagogy has to be <strong>encoded into the system&#8217;s structure</strong>.</p></blockquote><p>In our tutor, this begins with strict curriculum confinement. The model is not allowed to draw on general world knowledge. It can only use vetted course material. If the answer is not there, it must say so. This single design decision fundamentally changes the character of the interaction. The tutor becomes reliable, predictable, and trustworthy, not because it is smarter, but because it is bounded.</p><p>Beyond this, the knowledge base itself is not flat. It is semantically structured into tasks, hints, explanations, misconceptions, and encouragement. These categories are not cosmetic. They define what kind of response is permitted in a given situation. A task is never a solution. A hint is never a full explanation. A misconception is addressed gently and explicitly. Encouragement is deliberately separated from correctness.</p><p>This is the point at which the system stops being &#8220;just a prompt&#8221; and becomes a <strong>designed artifact</strong>.</p><p>At the center of this approach lies something very simple: a curated, structured and modular knowledge base enriched with semantic behavior tags. Through this structure a system that cannot wander into hallucinations, cannot invent facts, and cannot short-circuit learning by giving away solutions (at least not so frequently). Every explanation, every hint, and every instance of encouragement is grounded in approved content. The result is a tutor where students feel safe to ask questions without fear of judgment, and where learning unfolds at a pace that is uniquely theirs, while remaining pedagogically controlled by design and strictly aligned with the curriculum through the model&#8217;s tool interface.</p><p>This structure is paired with a layered response strategy that always begins with scaffolding and is guided by trend-based hint and praise logic. When a student needs more support, the AI responds with encouragement and carefully chosen hints. When confidence grows and help-seeking stabilizes, the tutor steps back and reinforces autonomy. The interaction becomes dynamic and human-like, not because of raw computational power, but because of pedagogical intent.</p><p>By encoding content in this way, the tutor adapts its guidance without giving away solutions, detects misconceptions and responds with targeted clarification, provides progressive scaffolding from hints to deeper conceptual insight, maintains consistency across interactions, and stays entirely within the curriculum.</p><p>This results in something close to a transparent, inspectable AI teacher model rather than a black box. Educators can understand why the tutor responds the way it does and can adjust the content themselves. This level of control and transparency remains rare in AI-powered education.</p><p>From this work, we derived a reusable template for AI tutor prompts that is fully aligned with these principles: pedagogical control, curriculum confinement, modular structure, trend-based support, and safety by design. This template describes the system prompt used to instantiate the tutor evaluated in our study. Its purpose is not to &#8220;make the model nicer,&#8221; but to operationalize pedagogical constraints, curriculum confinement, and safe scaffolding <strong>by design</strong>.</p><h4><strong>1. Tutor Identity and Scope</strong></h4><p>The tutor is instantiated as a curriculum-bound tutor for a specific course. </p><pre><code><code>You are an AI tutor named &lt;TUTOR_NAME&gt;.

You support learners in the course &lt;COURSE_NAME&gt;.
Your role is to help students learn by guiding understanding, not by providing shortcuts or direct solutions.

You are NOT a general-purpose assistant.

and pedagogy over speed.</code></code></pre><h2><strong>An Architectural Blueprint for AI Tutor</strong></h2><p>A central novelty of this work is what it does <em>not</em> require. The tutor does not rely on fine-tuning, proprietary infrastructure, complex retrieval pipelines, embeddings, or custom models. Instead, we show that <strong>a simple, lightweight architecture</strong>, when combined with deliberate pedagogical design, can be sufficient to create a safe and effective AI tutor.</p><p>The system builds conversational context over time allowing interactions to remain coherent across turns. Responses are streamed to maintain engagement and reduce latency. The tutor&#8217;s behavior is governed by explicitly restricted system prompts that enforce age-appropriate tone, prohibit direct solutions, and encourage Socratic guidance. Access to knowledge is strictly file-based, ensuring that the tutor cannot move beyond the boundaries of the course content.</p><p>This design makes the system <strong>explainable to teachers</strong> and <strong>reproducible across courses</strong>. Educators can create new tutors simply by adding semantically structured Markdown files. Schools can deploy the system without backend complexity or specialized infrastructure. As a result, the approach is viable for real educational settings, where reliability, transparency, and control matter more than technical sophistication. In this sense, the paper is not merely an experience report, but a reusable blueprint for the next generation of didactically controlled AI tutors.</p><p>Teachers who participated in our study appreciated the tutor&#8217;s consistency, safety, and curricular fidelity. Importantly, the tutor was not perceived as a replacement, but as a support, particularly during phases of independent work. This reinforces a principle we consider essential: <strong>AI tutors work best when they extend teacher capacity, rather than compete with it.</strong></p><p>What excites us most is that this blueprint does not stop at programming education. Although the system was designed for adolescents learning programming in interdisciplinary courses, its implications reach far beyond the classroom. One can imagine <strong>health applications </strong>that encourage patients precisely when motivation begins to fade, gently supporting the difficult moments of physiotherapy or medication routines, while remaining strictly within verified medical guidelines. <strong>Mental wellbeing companions</strong> could offer structured, calming support without improvising advice or stepping outside evidence-based boundaries. <strong>Workplace onboarding systems</strong> might notice repeated confusion and seamlessly shift into a more guided mode, helping new employees learn without feeling overwhelmed.</p><p>Across all these examples, the underlying vision remains the same. <strong>AI is not positioned as a machine that replaces human expertise, but as a companion that extends it.</strong> <strong>An assistant that is structured, transparent, and consistently aligned with human-designed boundaries.</strong> A tool that does not flatten learning by offering instant answers, but enriches it by guiding discovery, supporting productive struggle, and noticing the subtle signals of human behaviour.</p><p>At <a href="https://thinkable.space">Thinkable</a>, we see this as a crucial requirement. <strong>Technology is at its best when it helps people grow, not by removing challenges, but by turning challenges into opportunities for confidence, mastery, and curiosity.</strong> The future of AI in education, and far beyond it, will not be shaped by how much information a system can generate, but by how wisely it responds, how gently it supports, and how faithfully it follows pedagogical intent.</p><p>We are only at the beginning. Yet with each iteration, each learner interaction, and each carefully crafted knowledge module, we move closer to a world in which AI behaves less like an oracle and more like a thoughtful, patient guide, a companion that encourages, nudges, reminds, and celebrates real learning.
